Opposition leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday made the most hypocritical remark of his political life during a tour of his Kisumu political bedrock.
The leader who has since dropped his initial rebellious and disruptive nature, and endorsed the government advised the Luo Nyanza region to stop whining about being marginalized by the government, and depend on itself instead.
“The vicious cycle of poverty goes 'we are poor, and because we are poor we cannot save, and because we cannot save we cannot invest, and because we cannot invest we are poor'. This thing can be reversed so that we move from poverty to prosperity,” he was quoted by the Daily Nation.
He also urged the region to stop whining about bad politics, a laughable remark whichever way you look at it.
How could he tell the region to stop crying about bad politics when he is the one who planted the seed, repeatedly lamenting of being rigged in the last 3 consecutive elections, yet he is aware that his word is the gospel in the region?
The former Premier forgot that the region has remained one of the most unattractive for investments because it turns into a battlefield on his orders during elections.
The region, especially Kisumu, is known for the destruction of property and looting during political demonstrations, on most occasions linked to him, making it very hard for anyone, including the residents to take the risk of investing.
He also forgot that despite his family being at the helm of the nation’s politics for years, himself being the Premier at some point and his father Oginga Odinga the Vice President, they did very little to help their own people.
The Great Lake Victoria which remains the region's biggest economical backbone remained affected by water hyacinth during his tenure as Premier, making it hard for the common people who depend on it to work as he is suggesting.
And now that he is again very close to the President he is yet to undertake any major initiative to at least enlighten the people on self-reliance, or champion for initiatives that could bring in some jobs for the jubless youth, the blame going back to him.
As much as he might have meant well for the people, Raila forgot that he is the main cause for the problems the region is facing, and is among the very few people who can rectify that but is yet to do it.
