Subukia MP Kinuthia Gachobe has accused his Bahati counterpart Kimani Ngunjiri of allegedly being used by tycoon Mansukh Patel to have victims of the Solai Dam tragedy sign an indemnity agreement.

Mansukh is the owner of the dam that burst and killed 47 people. It also left massive destruction of property in Solai.

Gachobe said Ngunjiri is taking political advantage to meddle in the affairs of handling the victims.

Several victims have come out to complain that they were forced to sign an agreement with the Patel family without even being allowed to read it and understand.

“I feel cheated. It is true I signed the indemnity, but I was not allowed time to read it. The local administrators and management were hostile and made us to sign,” one victim said.

The agreement cautions the Patel family from any liability and might be an impediment to the Director of Public Prosecutions who has ordered legal action against owners of the dam.

Ngunjiri has, however, dismissed claims that he has been meddling in the affairs of the victims.

“Disaster knows no boundaries and that is why friends came from as far as Nairobi to offer a helping hand to the tragedy victims. When I offer help to Solai victims I do so as a friend and a neighbor,” said Ngunjiri.
