The Kalenjin community is a highly patriarchal society, where roles between men and women are clear cut.
A kitchen, of course, is a woman’s fortress, but it can’t be always until you get married. As such, men have come up with ways to avoid the kitchen duties.
Here are some of them;
Buying new utensils
Doing the dishes happens to be the hardest task for every man out there. A man will almost do anything to avoid it, including buying new utensils, as James once did when he was still a bachelor. He says that he would buy sufurias when the task of scrubbing ugali remnants became too much to bear.
Hanging around neighbour’s houses especially during meal times
This is guaranteed to make you enemy number one but there are some people who have mastered the art, going from house to house as if in a merry go round. Some will go to a neighbour’s house in the pretence of watching TV hoping that he can get something once the meal is ready.
Marrying
When the going gets tough, a man just marries in order to avoid kitchen duties altogether. Of course, the woman has to be willing to do so. If she does, the man just sits there and concentrates on getting a little bit fatter.
Eating out
Although not a popular thing, men resort to eating out only when it is unavoidable. The Kalenjin man sometimes lives a frugal life, where he has a stock of maize enough to last him a year. The thought of eating does not always register in their minds unless pangs of hunger can no longer be ignored.
