Matatu operators in Kisumu town have devised cunning ways of surviving the ongoing crackdown on Passenger Service Vehicles (PSV).
The government on Monday kicked off the campaign in a bid to restore sanity in the roads and eradicate avoidable accidents.
Not to be left behind, traffic police in Kisumu on Tuesday mounted several roadblocks on major roads, including the Kisumu-Nairobi highway, seeking to fully enforce the Michuki rules and keep not roadworthy vehicles off the routes.
But to avoid the dragnets, the matatu operators have invented and adopted new routes, some of which snake through estates and residential areas on their way to their destinations.
Others have also kept off the highway, choosing to only offer estate services for the day, reports the Standard.
Several matatus were impounded and taken for inspection in the crackdown, as well as some operators including drivers and conductors.
Other operators chose to keep off the roads to avoid the same.
Area Regional Traffic Commandant Andrew Naibei could not, however, confirm the actual statistics of the arrests and vehicles nabbed in the crackdown.
''We are still compiling the lists and will give the data later. Operations is also still going on so we cannot divulge details today, may be later or tomorrow,'' the police boss is quoted by the paper.
