A group of Kikuyu elders is set to visit opposition leader Raila Odinga at his Opoda farm today (Saturday).
The meeting, which has been planned secretly with the message being passed selectively to members, is said to be a platform to thank Raila for ‘working with President Uhuru Kenyatta'.
The Standard reported that the elders will deliver a special message to Raila from Kikuyu leaders supporting his new-found friendship with President Kenyatta.
Raila made peace with Uhuru on March 9, 2018, and the two have been working together since then.
Raila was Uhuru’s fiercest critic since 2013 when he lost to him in the polls.
In 2017, Raila also lost to Uhuru in the August 8 elections which were later nullified by the Supreme Court and a repeat poll ordered.
He, Raila, however, refused to participate in the repeat polls citing incompetence on the part of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Uhuru won the repeat election which saw Raila and his bandwagon go on an overdrive in disrupting the operations of the government and creating political tension in the country.
He was also sworn in as the peoples’ president creating more tension in the country’s political arena.
It is on the backdrop of these political sideshows that a deal between the opposition leader and the President was reached leading to the handshake which saved the country from political upheaval.
In 2017, Kikuyu elders cursed business mogul SK Macharia, the owner of Royal Media Services, for supporting Raila Odinga.
They accused him of betraying the Kikuyu community.
