A middle aged man was beaten on Wednesday evening after he allegedly dragged a married woman into a bush with an intention to rape her.
The incident happened in Ikonge, Nyamira County.
Area assistant chief Fred Obae said the suspect, Pius Ratemo, was drunk when he attempted to rape Damaris Nyanchama.
"Nyanchama was returning home from a posho mill at 6:30pm when Ratema forcibly grabbed her left hand, dragged her into a nearby bush to rape her," said Mr. Obae.
He noted that Nyanchama tried to resist in vain.
"The woman's efforts to resist didn't bore fruits since energetic Ratemo could not hear any of her plea to release her but, luckily passersby who heard her screaming rushed to the scene to rescue her," he stated.
Obae added: "Angry locals nabbed Ratemo who had started removing his pants to rape Nyanchama. They beat him before surrendering him to my office."
The chief said he surrendered the suspect to a nearby Matongo police post.
"Ratemo was drunk and I could not release him since locals threatened to kill him. I took him to a police station where he will be safe," he said.
