Unlike other major towns in Kenya, Eldoret was not founded on the British influence. It actually originated from South African farmers and Boers running away from British colonialism.

Residence of youths

According to a population census of 2009, it was established that 80 per cent of Eldoret town residents were youths. Majority of these youths are either working class or students.

Home to oldest Indian investors

Eldoret is home to Kenya's oldest Indian investors. The likes of Rai, Kandola, Shah, Lochab and Patel have been living and doing business in Eldoret town since 1908.

Centre of Education

Its tremendous growth has been attributed to a large number of educational institutions in the area. Most notable institutions include; Moi University, Mt. Kenya University, Rift Valley Technical Institute (RVTTI), Eldoret National Polytechnic, Kisii University, the University of Eldoret, Catholic University among others.

Second largest Referral hospital in Kenya

Eldoret is home to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH), the second largest in the country after Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi.

Fastest expanding estates

Due to its fast-growing nature, the population increase demands more housing. The estates are rapidly expanding and much more are mushrooming frequently. The already established and expanding estates in Eldoret include West Indies, Langas, Huruma, Kapsoya, Action, Subaru, Jerusalem, Kimumu, Pioneer, Eastleigh, Kahoya, Sinai, Elgon View, Kipkaren, West and many others.
