Fishermen in Nyaudenge Beach in Bondo, Siaya County, are mourning one of their colleagues who drowned on Friday, after a hippopotamus attack.
The fisherman who has been identified as Odero was reportedly on a fishing expedition with three others when the hippo struck their boat and destroyed it.
The incident was confirmed by North Yimbo location Chief Opil Rabut who said that the group was forced to jump into the water and swim to safety.
He said that the deceased drowned after being unable to swim to safety.
"The three other fishermen managed to swim to the shore but Odero drowned after he was overwhelmed," he told the Standard.
He added that attempts by fellow fishermen at the shore to save Odero were futile as he had already drowned.
He added that an operation has since been launched to search for Odero's body.
The administrator said that the operation will be done by area fishermen in collaboration with the provincial administration.
The incident comes only two weeks after another fisherman was killed after a crocodile attack in the neighbouring Oele beach.
