The County Government of Taita Taveta has released bursary funds for each ward, Governor Granton Samboja has confirmed.
The County Education Fund disbursed Sh1 million for every ward for the month of October 2018 after the Ward Bursary Committees submitted the names of the beneficiaries.
Speaking in Saghasa, Werugha ward during a fundraiser to assist parents to cater for school fees of their children, CeC - Education and Libraries Daniel Makoko said that chairpersons collected the cheques from his office.
"Probably the ward bursary committees haven't contacted the residents to inform them of the beneficiaries. Werugha ward chairperson Mr. Msagha sat with the committee and brought the names of beneficiaries and I can confirm that I issued him with a cheque," said Makoko.
Samboja ordered the County Department of Education and Libraries to ensure that the list of the beneficiaries is pinned at strategic places for the public to access the information and ensure transparency in bursary allocation.
He said those seeking for the higher seats come 2022 should use other avenues rather than propagating propaganda with the aim of gaining political mileage.
"Some are even preaching lies in church claiming that I have not given them bursary money. We shall deposit the December share in January once we receive the list of beneficiaries from the ward bursary committees. Each ward will receive 1 million shillings," Samboja said.
A total of Sh10 million have been issued out as education loans. The figure is informed by the number of students who applied and the amount they requested for.
Starting January 2019, Samboja said the County Government will pay fees for 159 students on full scholarship.
"The 100 students from each Ward will join the other 59 beneficiaries in the previous years," he said on Wednesday.
A total of Sh572,000 was raised to support education in the area.
The Chairperson Saghasa Parents Association Rosina Mwanjala said that members can now be able to receive interest-free loans to fund education of their children.
