According to a report by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), accounting officers in seven ministries need to be probed over misappropriation of monies in the ministries.

In the report for the financial year 2015/2016, Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi who is the PAC chair has proposed prosecution against the named officials, in the report tabled on Wednesday.

The officials are drawn from the Interior, Education, Health, Defence, Agriculture, Devolution and Public Service ministries.

The committee is now requesting the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to pursue the matter.

"If the holder of a public office, including a political office, directs or approves the use of public funds contrary to law or instructions, the person is liable for any loss arising from that use and shall make good the loss, whether the person remains the holder of the office or not,’’ read the report as was seen by the People Daily.

The committee has drawn the most attention to the Interior ministry for among others, the irregular award of Sh3.5 billion tender for security officers' insurance cover.

The ministry reportedly went ahead to award the tender to the highest bidder and not the lowest as should be.

Another Sh8.6 billion was questionably used for the purchase of goods and services from international merchants.

The Health ministry is in hot soup for an irregular hiring health apparatus at Sh4.2 billion, with the committee now inviting the Auditor General to look into the matter.
