The founding father of the nation, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta’s relationship with Paul Ngei was defined by both respect and fear.

It is recorded that Kenyatta could not sit comfortably without knowing the late Ngei's whereabouts. 

The first President knew Ngei was not a joke as far as the politics of the country was concerned.

He is said to have told one of his then ministers, the late Njenga Karume, that he could not sleep until he ensued Ngei was also in bed.

“I cannot allow a situation where I do not know where Ngei is or where he is sleeping at any given time. I am sure you do not know what he is capable of doing to this government,” Kenyatta told Karume.

History has it that Kenyatta disclosed he used to call Ngei to confirm what he was doing before retiring to bed.

Ngei was a man with many faces, as Kenyatta used to describe him.

“Every time I want to go to bed, I must call him to confirm he is also in bed. If I lose him as a minister, I will not be in a position to control him that way.” the late Kenyatta is quoted to had said.

Ngei enjoyed the support of the Kamba community and his word was not ignored in the political scene.
