Going shopping is all fun and games, but the fun stops when you use more money than you intended to, and automatically run broke.

If you're a victim of such, here are tips to help you become a smart shopper and save money in the process:

1.Create a shopping list

A shopping list will not only give you an organised approach while shopping but also will help you keep your impulse shopping to a minimum.

So, before taking that shopping cart or shopping basket in the supermarket, ensure you have a shopping list entailing everything you plan on buying at hand.

If you make a shopping list, you will be able to differentiate your needs from your wants, and at the end of the day, you will save money.

2. Keep your shopaholic friends at bay

The friends you pick to take you shopping will either save or break your wallet.

If you hit the supermarket or mall with a compulsive shopper to help you with your shopping, be prepared to spend more money than you intend to.

They tend to sway you into buying things you hadn't planned for.

So, if you want to save some cash, tag along with a friend who will give you their honest opinions and will not push or tempt you into buying stuff you don't necessarily need.

3. Only carry the money you need

This will keep you away from spending outside your budget.

Before going shopping, ensure your wallet has the cash to cover for the items on your shopping list.

If you run out of cash, your shopping spree is over for the day.

4. Compare prices before shopping

Though it may seem like a lot of work, comparison shopping might save you money.

Some stores sell the same products but at slightly different prices.

For instance, one might be selling a 1-litre cooking oil at Sh800, and the other might be selling the same product, same brand at Sh750.

So always do your homework and frequent stores that are more pocket-friendly than the others — those extra coins matter.

5. Find cheaper deals online

Online shopping is becoming more popular in Kenya.

You could take advantage of cheap deals online and save some coins.

The trick here is to frequently check the online shopping websites and get notified in case there are special offers on your favourite products.
