Professor Makau Mutua on Thursday hinted at contesting for the nation’s top seat.

Mutua, who is a Kamba, has been very vocal on matters of national interest. He believes that he has what it takes to beat any candidate in the contest for power.

The seasonal lawyer believes that his entry into the race depends on a certain candidate's stand. He, however, didn’t disclose the candidate's name.

“I may have to think seriously of running for the presidency in 2022 if a certain person doesn’t do so. Stay tuned – at Garden Of Eden,” he tweeted Wednesday.

Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka will be among the most affected leaders if Mutua throws a hat in the ring. Mutua hails from the Kamba community. Kenyan politics start at the tribal level.

Both Mutua and Kalonzo will with no doubt split the community's votes if both of them decide to contest for the presidential seat when that time comes.

The division of the Kamba vote spells more doom for the candidates in the race to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta as he completes his second and final term in office.

Kalonzo will have to go back to the drawing board and see how he can counter Makau Mutua in the contest.

The situation would be worse if Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua also joins the contest.

The continued division of votes from the region will leave the trio weaker in the fight to beat the second in command William Ruto, who is considered one of the front-runners in the contest.

The Ukambani leaders must sit down and rethink about their personal ambitions before it is too late.
