President Kenyatta recently hinted that his endorsement for the 2022 presidential elections would be a shock and surprise to many. His utterance was to stop politicians from engaging in early 2022 campaigns.
However, in what came as a shocker to DP Ruto's closest of allies Uhuru has promoted the Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang'i into the powerful position of chairmanship in Development Implementation and Communication Cabinet Committee. This was through a Presidential circular dated 22/01/19.
The new developments happen despite the presence of Deputy President William Samoei Ruto who is constitutionally Uhuru's principal assistant. Dr. Matiang'i will now be required to directly report to the president, a thing that has not gone well with a section of North Rift politicians.
If the signs are what to go by, then DP Ruto will have to devise a new strategy to counter the growing popularity of CS Matiang'i who is seemingly rising to fame by each sunrise.
For some time now, Dr Matiang'i has been a close confidant of the president Uhuru and former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga, a thing that political analysts claim will offer him an upper hand in 2022 presidential race if he ever fronts himself to the race.
