Speaking when he led a fundraiser for Lamu Women Sacco at the Mkunguni Square on Saturday, Atwoli said that referendum will be held this year or early next year.

He indicated that the push to change the 2010 constitution is unstoppable.

Atwoil asked those opposing referendum calls to get ready for defeat, noting that Kenyans want a change.

The COTU Secretary-General observed that the referendum will heal the country of past injustices and provide new dawn for fresh, fair and inclusive leadership.

"Kenyans should get ready for referendum either this year or early next year and those doubting my words should write them down," Atwoli said.

Atwoli stated that he will rally Kenyans to support the plebiscite once the Building Bridges Committee hands its report to President Uhuru and opposition leader Raila Odinga.

The COTU boss is among prominent Kenyans pushing for the constitutional change and wants the structure of the country's governance system changed for inclusivity.

The push for referendum continues to gain momentum as majority leaders support it.

The Building Bridges Committee chaired by Garissa Senator Yusuf Haji and his Busia counterpart Amos Wako is currently collecting Kenyans views on the proposed referendum.

The committee that was formed after March 9, 2018, handshake is expected to give its report in May.
