The accident happened at Chumvi area in Machakos County.

Sources indicate that the accident involved three vehicles. According to the Standard, Machakos County Commander Samuel Mukindia confirmed the incident saying it was unfortunate to lose lives.

The accident occurred after a 14-seater matatu attempted to overtake a fleet of vehicles before the collision.

"The matatu was unable to overtake a number of vehicles before the accident that involved a multiple of vehicles happened", said Mukindia as reported by the Standard.

He asked drivers in the region to drive cautiously in order to avoid accidents. The passengers who sustained injuries were rushed to Machakos level 5 hospital where they were admitted.

The accident caused a snarl up along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

Meanwhile, Governor Mutua has put on notice drivers against breaking road safety rules. The governor said that his government will not allow Kenyans to die anymore in road accidents because of careless drivers.

“For many years, our roads have created orphans and left families suffering.  It is the responsibility of all of us, and especially, governments to do something to stop the massacre we face on our roads,” said Mutua.
