The Government of Kenya has called for calm following recent reports of abduction of Nation reporter Barrack Oduor, and his colleague Sharon Otieno.
The two were abducted while leaving the Graca Hotel in Rongo, on Monday evening, while on a mission to get information about a supposed scandal within the Migori county government.
Though Oduor managed to escape from the abductors after jumping off the speeding car in which they were being transported, Sharon, a second year Medical Records Degree student at Rongo University remained behind, and was later found dead in Homa Bay.
In a statement on Wednesday, the Government through its Spokesman Erick Kiraithe confirmed being aware of the incident, pledging to take necessary investigative measures.
‘’Our attention has been drawn to the reported death of Sharon Otieno, a university student at Rongo University under circumstances that distinctly pint to murder. We take this opportunity to express our condolences to the family, relatives and friends of Sharon Otieno,’’ the statement read in part.
''As we mourn her untimely death, we take this opportunity to assure the public and the media fraternity in particular that this matter will be expeditiously investigated and the perpetrators of this heinous act will be made to face the full force of the law,’’ further reads the statement as is communicated on the Government of Kenya Spokesperson's official twitter handle.
Oduor who is currently nursing injuries at the Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu has since noted that his source, Migori Governor Okoth Obado’s Personal Secretary Michael Oyamo, tricked them into boarding a car which took off with them afterwards.
Oyamo was on Tuesday arrested in Uriri and is helping the police with investigations.
