Governor Hassan Joho has said that there is a solution to the extremism problem in Mombasa.
Speaking at Aga Khan Academy Hall on Monday during Mombasa Youth Convention and Global Migration Film Festival, Joho said that if everyone plays his role, this menace would be dealt with.
“I, as your governor, I know my responsibilities. Do you understand your responsibilities? Do you fulfill your responsibilities?”
Joho also encouraged everyone to understand extremism before suggesting solutions. He discouraged relevant authorities from concentrating on Al Shabaab recruitment and have a broad approach in ending this social ill.
“There are different forms of extremism. We now need to broadly look at the issue and understand it. What do we mean by extremism? Sometimes you might think that it could only be the Al Shabaab recruitment. Even what happens in our estates where a youth is ready to sacrifice his life amounts to extremism. People are always trying to explain why young people choose to be radicalized. Some say it is the economy, marginalization while others say it is their rights. We need to get to a point where everyone is accountable for his responsibility,” he said.
Joho asked the youth to emulate their grandparents who lived communally and cared for their neighbours’ wellbeing.
