Three suspects were arrested on Tuesday over allegations of stealing over Sh970,000 from a 67-year-old woman's Equity bank account.
Anthony Babu Kaira, Kelvin Maina and Joseph Kariuki were arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Thika West.
"THREE #Theft Suspects who Siphoned over Ksh. 970K from Equity Bank Acc of 67-Yr-Old Mrs Faith Wanjiku were today arrested by @DCI_Kenya Detectives based at Thika West in an Intelligence-led Operation. The Three; Antony Babu KAIRA, Kelvin MAINA & Joseph KARIUKI in lawful custody," DCI tweeted on Tuesday evening.
DCI revealed that the three suspects withdrew the money from Faith Wanjiku’s bank account to various Equitel numbers through a mobile banking application called Eazy App.
The withdrawal of the money was made in four separate transactions; three of the transactions amounted to Sh300,030 each while the last transaction amounted to Sh70,000.
The suspects will be arraigned in court as detectives continue to look for more suspects who could have been involved in the heist.
"The Amount was transacted in four series using the Eazzy App in the sequence; Antony Kaira- 300,030/= Kelvin Maina- 300,030/=Vivian Jelagat- 300,030/= and Ksh 70K to various Equitel Nos. Suspects to be arraigned tomorrow as search for more probable perpetrators continues," added the DCI.
