Vice Chancellors in both private and public universities have unveiled their plans to hike fees.
Speaking on Friday during the 61st graduation ceremony at the University of Nairobi, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha asked VCs to ensure that they have consulted parents and students over the same before implementation.
Magoha said that there is no way VCs can reach such a decision without the input of parents and students.
He noted that the matter is critical and needs to be addressed with the seriousness it deserves.
He also noted that all stakeholders in the education sector must be brought to the board to discuss the matter before the VCs can embark on the execution of the same.
Magoha also said that the universities are no longer in a position to sustain the flat rate fee of Sh16,000 per student per programme.
The VCs want the amount raised to Sh24,000 per student per programme for better service delivery. Magoha, however, said the matter needs time and consultation.
“As you are aware, the Cabinet has endorsed proposals to conduct reforms in universities to ensure the institutions run efficiently,” said Magoha.
He also asked different stakeholders to contribute towards the debate without fear of contradiction.
“I am open to all stakeholders views. My door is open as we are all seeking a common goal of ensuring world-class education for young scholars,” he said.
