President Uhuru Kenyatta is celebrating his 55th birthday today.
Born 26th October 1961 to the founding Kenyan president Mzee Jomo Kenyatta and first lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta,he attended the prestigious St.Mary's School in Nairobi between 1979 and 1980.
He later proceeded to Amherst College in the US where he studied economics, political science, and government.
After his graduation, Uhuru returned to Kenya and started Wilham Kenya Ltd, a company he used to source and export agricultural produce.
He was nominated to parliament in 2001 by retired president Daniel Moi's party KANU and made Minister for Local Government.
On Moi's retirement, he was favoured to succeed him despite his political inexperience.
Kenyatta ran for president on KANU ticket in 2002 general election but lost to Mwai Kibaki by a big margin which saw him become the official opposition leader in parliament.
In 2007,he backed Kibaki for re-election and after his controversial win, he was appointed Minister for Local government in January 2008 before becoming deputy prime minister and minister for Trade in the grand coalition government which saw Kibaki and his closest challenger Raila Odinga share power.
He also served as minister of Finance from 2009 to 2012,while remaining as Deputy Prime minister.
He was accused by the International Criminal Court-ICC of committing crimes against in humanity in relation to the 2007/8 post-election violence and subsequently resigned as Minister for Finance.
Uhuru was elected as the 4th President of Kenya after defeating Raila Odinga with a narrow majority in a single round of voting in the 2013 General Elections.
Kenyatta is married to Magerette Kenyatta with three children; Jomo, Ngina and Jaba.
