IEBC's decision to reject the Okoa Kenya initiatives push for referendum is in order. Whether the signatures submitted met the required 1 million signatures threshold or not, the timing wasn't right for a referendum.
This country doesn't need a referendum at the moment. Maybe there are clauses or articles in the constitution that will need to be amended later.
But we must first change the way we approach elections. The referendum will achieve nothing in terms of saving the country. Unless the we change our voting pattern, the outcome of the referendum won't represent the true views of the people.
It would be a battle between the opposition and the government just like the other elections. People would still vote on ethnic and party lines.
Thus, it's unnecessary to have a referendum at this time when our voting mentality is still flawed.
The referendum would end up being another burden to the economy which is already weak. Instead of saving the country, it would bel adding salt to the wound.
The constitution doesn't necessary need to be amended, what we should amend is our mentality.
Changing our reasoning will make us vote leaders with integrity. Leaders who can move this country forward and grow the economy to be able to support a referendum.
