Moi University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Isaac Kosgey has promised to support students who came up with a pesticide to fight the devastating fall armyworms.
The worm has been a major setback to maize farming in the North Rift region where farmers have lost thousands of acres.
Speaking while he met Paul Kemei Musumba who is the inventor of the pesticide, Prof. Kosgey said the University will give him all the support he needs to ensure that his innovation is fully realized and rolled out to the benefit of farmers.
“As Moi University, we shall support you until you reach the point of commercial production of the pesticide. We are very supportive of innovations by our staff and students,” said Prof. Kosgey.
He called upon other students to embrace research and innovation which will help in solving problems that affect Kenyans at large.
“As a university, we will channel more funds to research and innovation for our students to pursue their research without any difficulties since it is only through innovation that we can find solutions to problems facing us,” added the VC.
Musumba, a fourth-year student of the School of Education demonstrated before the Vice Chancellor how his newest discovery from herbs kills the notorious armyworms within a minute.
If successful the innovation will go a long way to addressing the fall armyworms infestation that has has been a major threat to food security in the country.
