The Council of Professionals of Kenya has called for the reintroduction of the position of official opposition.

According to chairman Ababu Namwamba, the office will help to strengthen democracy in the country.

Namwamba said there is need to review the current 'winner takes all' which fails to recognise other leaders who lose regardless of their numbers.

"We have already started re-examining options to tackle the issues of exclusivity and empowerment within the law," Namwamba said.

"The council is looking forward to a more responsible, mature and patriotic dialogue to heal the nation and empower its people in an inclusive sense," Namwamba said.

Namwamba's council also called on the National Super Alliance (NASA) opposition to accept the recent ruling by the Supreme Court where President Uhuru Kenyatta's rerun win was upheld.

'While we may not agree with the decision made by our institutions such as the Supreme Court's ruling, we must at all times respect their decisions. The narrative that the Supreme Court's ruling only bestows legal legitimacy and not political legitimacy is cheap, baseless, unfounded, misleading and lacks merit," Namwamba said.

His council will be unveiling the proposal blueprint on reintroducing the position of leader of the opposition in the near future.
