Owners of old and abandoned roadside kiosks in Nakuru County have been warned that the structures will be demolished to boost security and environmental conservation.
According to the Teachers Council of Elders in charge of security Paul Ogega, abandoned roadside kiosks are turned into criminal havens at night fall and also harbour drug pedlars and abusers among the local youth during day time.
During an Estates management and housing forum on Saturday at KITI Guest House in the area, the elder observed further that the abandoned kiosks were posing as an environmental hazard as they have been reduced to damping sites.
“I take this opportunity to ask owners of old roadside kiosks to demolish them and make use of the materials or else we will take charge and demolish them. We have observed with concern the negative impacts the structures have on our community,’’ said Ogega.
He added, “These structures are used by criminals at night as hideouts while our youths are finding them ideal for drug peddling and shooting joints.”
Ogega also asked local landlords and home owners not to allow the construction of road side kiosks outside their houses to minimise insecurity.
