The Kenya Dental and Association (KDA) chairman Dr Andrew Wetende has called on the public to observe hygiene and good diet in an effort of preventing tooth decay that has been a major problem among the children.

Speaking in Eldoret on Wednesday after offering a free dental check-up, toothpaste and brushes to Uasin Gishu Primary school pupils Wetende said that more than 90 percent of Kenya's population suffers dental health problems. He said that the public should be sensitised on how to observe dental hygiene for them to keep their teeth up to old age.

"Main diseases include dental carriers, swelling of gums problems which is mainly cause due to poor diet, not brushing regularly and failure to keep hygiene, in an effort to avoid such disease you should replace your tooth brush for three months and have good diet," he advised

Wetende called upon the county governments to increase funding on oral health and urged the public to have regular dental check0-ups.

"You can try to visit a dentist at least once in a year so that dental disorders can be detected early and you get to keep all your teeth intact," he said.

He added the association was targeting schools in the forty-seven counties to reinforce the practice of maintaining clean teeth among pupils whilst giving donations.
