The county government of Kisii has been urged to absorb young graduates from institutions of higher learning as a way of dispelling desperations from among them, that has occasionally resulted into committing suicides, a group of scholars have said.
Speaking at a funeral ceremony at Kenyenya Township, the educationists were unanimous that the county government should come with a policy of employing the graduates on contract in a bid to enable them get a source of finance to pay their HELB loans.
They said the scheme was essential since it had worked in western nations, and seemed to be adopted by Kiambu County government where graduates have been used by Governor William Kabogo as interns.
“Kisii County government has responsibility of ensuring that young graduates are given a chance to serve as interns in the government. They are very promising but the unemployment situation is making many of them lose hope in life,” said Dr. Erick Ogwora.
“The mode of using graduates as interns has worked in the western countries. I have seen the mode being employed by Kiambu County leadership. Our fresh graduates should get a source of income to clear their outstanding HELB loans,” added Prof. Soloveo Bogonko.
They said the move will help combat the rising cases of young scholars committing suicide in the region due to frustrations in life.
“I have attended burials of about three graduates and their stories were overwhelming. This is the way we can combat the vices besides reducing drastically the rampant unemployment rates,” added Dr. Ogwora.
