Former Kitutu Masaba MP Abuya Abuya has differed with DP William Ruto over the proposal to have IEBC conduct Jubilee Party nominations insisting that such an exercise is an internal affair.
According to Abuya, contracting the electoral body could 'endanger' credibility of the commission before 2017 polls.
“It’s always our wish that parties hold free, fair and transparent primaries but that should not be the work of the electoral commission. Primaries should be left for the parties to handle and not the national commission,” said Abuya.
“The move would hinder the credibility of the electoral body and subsequently endanger its mandate ahead of general elections. Any flaws detected could be translated to national elections hence creating a major trust problem,” he added.
Abuya further said that if the DP’s request goes through, it would hamper serious preparations by IEBC ahead of General elections.
“Time factor is also important. IEBC cannot do two parallel elections in a short duration because this could hamper service delivery and lead to un imaginable outcry. They should only stick to holding national polls,” he said.
Ruto has in the past hinted that JP could use IEBC during its primaries slated for early next year.
