Some Kibera traders are said to be importing counterfeit electricity cables and selling them to make profits even though they know these are a risk to human life.

This comes after containers having 2,000 rolls of counterfeit electricity cables were impounded at a freight station in Mombasa last month. The cables according to the agency were set to be transported to a market in south Sudan.

The agency’s CEO, John Akoten said they will work with other agencies to ensure the fake cables are not sold anywhere in the country. He, however, pointed out that most illegal transporters are from China which found Kenya a suitable and ready market. Akoten revealed that in the last one year, cases of sub standard goods tabled before his agency can amount to sh1 billion, whereby, they destroyed goods amounting to sh250, 000.

Kibera electric and electronics sellers said they have also been affected by counterfeit cables.
