Two people were today critically injured while several escaped with minor injuries when a Kisii bound Probox matatu veered off the road and rolled severally along the Kebirigo-Keroka road.
The early morning accident near Gesima Market shocked residents since it was the first of its kind along the busy highway that is under construction.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver was in a questionable speed despite the poor condition of the road and was visibly drunk.
“He was driving at a very high speed without taking into consideration of the poor road condition. He also seemed drunk since he staggered off the vehicle and sounded drunk,” said Walter Ondieki, an area resident.
The vehicle destroyed a perimeter wall of a homestead before rolling severally and destroying tea bushes.
“As you can see, besides the casualties, somebody’s gate was destroyed completely while some of his tea was uprooted,” he added.
Among those injured were family members travelling to Kisii town for an urgent meeting and the driver of the badly damaged vehicle. The casualties were rushed to Keroka District Hospital for further examination.
Keroka OCPD Benjamin Rugut confirmed the incident and cautioned drivers against over speeding during festive season and even after.
He said, “Some ten people have been rushed to Keroka Hospital but only two seem to be in a critical condition. It is good for drivers to drive slowly for safety of our people.”
