Human rights activists have now called upon the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) to prosecute the 302 officers who failed to appear before the commission for vetting.
Haki Africa human rights officer Francis Auma said the officers should be prosecuted for failing to abide by the law.
Speaking in an interview with this writer on Friday, Auma said the officers should not only be dismissed from work, but should also face the law just like any other ordinary citizen.
He said the country has embarked on police reforms hence any officer hindering the process is an enemy to the country.
“Why should they fail to appear before the commission, are they hiding something from the public? This is gross misconduct,” he said.
Auma further called for investigations in the force in a bid to weed out officers who liaise with criminal gangs to carry out criminal activities in the country.
NPSC on Thursday fired 302 police officers who refused to be vetted as part of the reforms introduced in the police force.
The reforms are aimed at restoring public confidence in the institution that has been marred by corruption.
NPSC chair Johnston Kavuludi said the decision to dismiss the officers was reached at a board meeting held at the commission's offices on Tuesday.
