A Kisumu based activist has called on the county government to hurry up the relocation of the Kachok dumpsite.
Speaking on Sunday at the Jomo Kenyatta grounds, Martin Otieno said that the overflowing dumpsite is giving Kisumu a bad image and in the process making investors shy away from investing in the Lakeside city.
“This dumpsite is located at a strategic place, and I can assure you that it is giving us a bad impression to the outside world. Who will like to put his or her money in a place with such a dumpsite in the city,” said Oduor.
He added: “We heard that a piece of land had been identified in Miwani last year. What happened to the relocation process? We are calling on the Raguma administration to relocate it as soon as possible.”
Oduor said if the government had the development agenda on its manifesto then the Kachok dumpsite should have been the first thing to deal with.
“This dumpsite is interfering with many activities in this city, the birds that have camped at the place usually cause panic among aircrafts as there are fears that they might get sacked into the engines of the aircrafts. We cannot allow our airport to be grounded just because some people are not doing their work,” said Oduor.
He said that it is time the Kisumu county government delivered, because they have promised to relocate the dumpsite on several occasions with nothing tangible being done.
The Kachok dumpsite has been a topic of discussion for many days, with the county saying it was in the process of relocating the facility which is still in use.
