Khalif Abdi, a Garissa based activist has faulted the government for imposing a curfew as away of fighting terrorism in parts of Garissa, Lamu and Tana River counties.
Khalif told KNA on Tuesday that the curfew is not a solution to insecurity in the region.
According to Khalif, the government’s dusk to dawn curfew is not realistic since areas which are adversely affected by the terror attacks in the recent past were allegedly left out.
Khalif suggested that the government should instead enhance security patrols along the border to flush out the ragtag militia.
He said imposing curfew won’t have any significant effect in the fight against terror.
“Curfew is not always the best solution to fight terror in the region but to enhance patrols and also working with local people who can give information on suspected militants and those working with them. The curfew will only serve to limit the population movement and hurt businesses,” he said.
“The security agencies have failed to create confidence among the people because those willing to volunteer information fear falling victims to arbitrary arrests and being labeled sympathisers,” the activist noted.
He urged the Cs to review the curfew saying in the past the government had imposed similar curfew which yielded no fruits.
“The government has the tendency of imposing curfews and not reviewing it within the stipulated time gazzeted. We call on the interior minister to ensure the curfew will remain within the time frame,” he added.
The curfew gazetted on July 8 was ordered to take effect by acting interior Cs Fred Matiangi.
The dusk to dawn curfew was imposed in Hulugho border point, Galmagala, Sangailu, Masalani, Bodhei, Milimani, Baure, Basuba, Mangai, Mararani, Ijara, Hola, Garsen, Kipini, Kiunga and Ishakani border point.
