A Kisii based activist and writer Joseph Kiai has mourned the death of the 22 Huruma victims of a building that collapsed on Friday night.
The death toll has since reached 22 as rescue operations are ongoing.
He has faulted the government for conducting inspections on buildings in Huruma and not taking any further action.
“The reports we receive claim the building had been marked as a ‘suspect’ that it did not attain the requirements of construction. The question is what did they do after that?” said Kiai.
He has blamed the county officials of sleeping on their jobs.
“It is the time government gets serious in their activities. Innocent Kenyans die because they have faith that the building they reside in is safe for them," said Kiai.
"They are not experts to know that a certain building does not meet the required standards of construction. That is the duty of the government, to protect its own citizens,” said Kiai.
He adds that those involved must be brought to book.
“Somebody must account for the mess. Someone must have to be prosecuted. We cannot condone this,” said Kiai.
