Activist Okiyah Omtatah has moved to court compelling the Central Bank governor Patrick Njoroge to implement an order to print new generation currency notes and coins within 180 days according to the constitution.
The high court has classified the case as urgent due to its demand to comply with the constitutional mandate.
“The petition and motion are hereby certified as urgent and both admitted for hearing on a priority basis,” said Justice John Mativo.
Omtatah went to court complaining that CBK has failed to implement the constitutional order barring it from printing and issuance of currency notes bearing portraits of any individuals.
“CBK and its boss Dr Njoroge have continued mischievously issuing Kenyans with currency bearing the portrait of the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta backdated to July 16 2017,” said Omtatah.
