A political activist and aspirant has urged the government to consider abolishing the existing nuclear power development policy because of its unsustainability. James Kaka who unsuccessfully vied for the Menengai Ward County Assembly representation in the last general elections said in an interview at his office in Nakuru town on Tuesday observed that the nuclear energy development programme policy was not viable in the country. He noted that apart from being an environmentally unfriendly and human health hazard threat, the prospects of nuclear energy development were fast dwindling across the world.Instead; Kaka urged the government to concentrate on other energy development programmes including Geothermal, wind and Petroleum that are natural and full of potential. “We have many alternatives of developing a sustainable energy sector in the country. I don’t see the reason why the government should waste resources developing a harmful thing that is receiving negative attitudes across the globe,’’said Kaka. He petitioned parliament to revoke the Nuclear Electricity Board that was established in 2010 by the Ministry of Energy through Gazette No.14188 and stop training of technicians and other logistic activities towards the development nuclear energy in the country with immediate effect. “With rising terrorism insecurity and worldwide crises concerning nuclear power,it is not prudent and realistic for us as a country to base our economic blue prints on delicate projects like the Nuclear Electricity generation project,’’noted Kaka.
