An activist in Bahati has called upon the youth from Bahati constituency and its environs to shun the culture of drug abuse.
Titus Wainaina, an activist with the Bahati Anti-Drug Movement, said that most youth in the county have fallen prey to drug abuse.
“Statistics are clear as a large number of youth indulged in drug abuse. Even a number of school going students have been influenced by their peers to adopt drug use,” said Wainaina.
Wainaina was speaking on Monday at Kabatini Division during an awareness day on the danger of drug abuse.
He challenged the society to take precautionary steps towards preventing the scourge.
“The society should be involved in providing counselling and guidance to the addicts to enable them to live in a drug-free society. Political leaders and the clergy should also take their roles in cushioning the youth against the drug abuse,” said the activist.
He urged the county government to establish rehabilitation centres to cater for the youths who are drug addicts.
“The county government cannot sit down and watch the lives of these young men and women ruined by the drugs. It has the responsibility to intervene in all ways,” Wainaina added.
The awareness day came in the wake of an outcry by Bahati residents over drug abuse. Most parents have expressed their worry over their children becoming drug addicts.
