The national government has been faulted for shutting down three TV stations despite a court order that directed it to open the stations.
Human rights activists in North Rift region led by acting executive officer at Center for Human Rights and Democracy Kipkorir Ng’etich, warned that if the government will not obey the court order to restore the transmissions, it will be setting a bad example for citizens to start disobeying the rule of law.
“No one is above the law and the government should allow the 3 major television stations to operate as ordered by the court, failure to which Kenyans will also be disobeying court orders,” he said.
Ng’etich added that shutting down the stations have denied Kenyans an opportunity to know what is happening around the world.
"Kenyans are in the dark since they are not informed on the happenings around the world. The TV stations that are not operating are the favorite to many because many Kenyans don’t watch KBC and K24,” he noted.
Last week, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i said NTV, Citizen and KTN News will remain shut until the government completes investigations into the illegal oath taken by Raila Odinga.
