Nyamira Youth Alliance now wants Kisii and Nyamira counties’ leadership to make public a Memorandum of Understanding over the ownership of the border town of Keroka and all existing maps that demarcate the town.
This comes few hours after police from Keroka and Ramasha engaged town residents in running battles on Tuesday after yet again another animosity between the residents from either side who claim ownership of the town.
In a statement through group chairperson Nyambega Gisesa, the group demanded the MoU be made public to reduce rising tensions.
“Time has come for leadership from both counties to make public the MoU which they signed some few months ago," said Gisesa.
"It’s also important that the authorities released official maps showing demarcation of the town. This is the only way we can stop this unprecedented violence,” said Gisesa.
They also requested Governor James Ongwae of Kisii and his Nyamira counterpart John Nyagarama to show ‘leadership’ and rally for peace in the town.
“Governor Ongwae and his counterpart Nyagarama have not shown leadership on the matter. They have kept quiet watching our town burn. Time has come for the two to step up and combat the ongoing aggression,” he added.
Gisesa requested Ichuni MCA Lawrence Aburi and his Rigoma counterpart Ben Sironga to work with local residents to boost integration among them.
“It’s also proper for Sironga and Aburi to come out clear and show their stand on the matter," said Gisesa.
"They should give leadership so that we make Keroka great again. More importantly, residents should know the contents of MoU that was signed so that everyone knows his or her responsibilities,” he said.
