Led by activist Moses Simiyu, they said Mombasa needs peace now more than ever before especially at a time the county government is angling towards boosting tourism revival efforts when the country is experiencing low visitor arrivals due to last year's prolonged political activity.

"Police are dong a good job and we must commend them for that," Simiyu who spoke on Wednesday said.

"Security is key in ensuring business and all other activities thrive without interruption."

He spoke two weeks after police gunned down nine suspected gangsters within 14 days in Mombasa town.

The last to be killed was a suspected gangster who police reported was on the list of Mombasa's top wanted criminals. He was shot dead in Bombolulu area.

County police commander Johnston Ipara said 47 rounds of ammunition were recovered at the deceased's house after a search.

Two other suspected members of the dreaded 'Wakali Kwanza' group were killed at Mtongwe area while six others were shot dead in Kisauni.

"As activists, we are in full support of this operation," Simiyu added.

"Peace must return to Mombasa for development to be realised."
