They noted that the elderly are increasing becoming an easy prey for the rapists in the country, a trend that is worrying and must be contained to safeguard their constitutional right to peace, protection and health.

The activists under the umbrella 'Africa Unite - Kenya Chapter' say that reports in the media have indicated a distressing thread of sexual assaults against helpless women in the rural villages, a concern they described as despicable and inhuman.

“It is totally unacceptable to have people rape women who cannot defend themselves. The saddest part is that these people are known and are left to go scot free," said Wangechi Wachira, convener of Africa Unite - Kenya Chapter at a press briefing in Nakuru hotel yesterday.

In particular, they called for justice of the 80-year-old woman who was raped in Nyeri by two people, in a story that ws aired on local televisions and showed a grim image of an ageing woman, weak to defend herself against the strong ‘insane’ men in her rural village.

“We are calling upon the office of the Director of Public Prosecution  to take up the matter. There must be justice for her," Ms Wachira said.

Ms Fanis Lisiagali,a member of the union called on the government to put up security mechanisms for the elderly in the villages.

“It is time that the government looked into the security of the elderly left alone in the villages. The rate at which they are targeted, it is important to provide them with security,” said Lisiagali.
