Environmental activists have threatened to sue the Mombasa County Government over the cholera outbreak in the county that left two people dead.
Speaking on Tuesday, the environmentalists led Ben Wemali blamed the county government for the outbreak, claiming that they had raised concerns over uncollected garbage in the county two weeks ago.
“Nobody took any action. We cannot allow our people to go on dying because of a simple thing. Collecting garbage is the county's work,” said Wemali.
Wemali further blamed the Governor Hassan Joho-led administration for setting up transfer stations for garbage in residential areas.
“This should not be the case. Flies are all over the place and sewage water has mixed with piped water causing contamination following the heavy rains. We will not allow people to play with lives of Mombasa residents after failing to clean up the city,” said Wemali.
Speaking on Monday, Mombasa Environment CeC Godfrey Nato said the county is developing a five-year County Integrated Development Plan which will include proper waste management.
Nato said internal challenges and lack of proper working equipment are to blame for the uncollected garbage piles in the county.
The county government through Health CeC Hazel Koitaba has banned food vending in the county in its efforts to contain the spread of cholera in the county.
