A Rongai-based human rights activist has warned parents to desist from carrying out female genital mutilation to their girls during the December holiday.

Speaking at Kambi Moto Trading centre during FGM awareness day, Leah Jeptoo said that the outdated cultural practices should be forgotten to relive young girls from cultural bondage.

“FGM is an outdated traditional rite that should be shunned in the modern society because it adds no value to our girls,” said Jeptoo.

She stated the 'cut' has had many complications that doom the future of girl child.

She revealed that she has sought help from the provincial administration to ensure that girls do not undergo the ' cut' during this festive season.

“We are working with chiefs to see that no girl is enrolled for the practice,” said Jeptoo.

Jeptoo urged members of public to be alert and report to the chiefs those practicing the act.

She noted that communities in Rongai area have not stopped FGM and that efforts have been doubled up to prosecute those found secretly circumcising their girls.

She said that lack of laws on gender based violence have been the greatest challenge in fighting the vice.

The activist urged the county government to develop a consultative forum involving the communities to accelerate the efforts towards elimination of gender-based violence and FGM.
