The government has been urged to address matters affecting farmers for them to reduce the cost of production to increase their production.
Speaking on Saturday during the farmers and Cord leaders meeting at POA Place Resort Cord leader Raila Odinga said that farmers are suffering due an increase in the cost of production yet agriculture is the backbone of the Kenyan economy.
"Farmers are crying foul for poor maize prices from last year's Sh3,200 to Sh2,300, selling their milk at Sh19 per litre instead of Sh40 as they used to in the previous years," he said.
He said farming has been unbearable where farmers spend alot of money only to make losses at the end of the season.
He said the loan rates to get farm inputs have skyrockted from the previous 16 percent.
"I urge the National Government through the Ministry of Agriculture to reduce the loan rates, subsidise fertilizer prices, and ensure the NKCC is owned by Wananchi and not a few individuals," he said.
He said that he has also urged Cord MPs to come up with bills that will assist farmers and table them in parliament.
