Local administrators have been encouraged to invest in proper intelligence in a bid to effectively combat rising cases of insecurity.
According to Sarang’ombe MCA Owino K’Otieno during his address to the public and security officers who had attended an open security forum at Kamukunji Grounds in Kibera on Friday, chiefs and the assistant chiefs need to create proper channels of communication between their respective offices and the public to get crucial information that concerns security.
“Chiefs should invest in intelligence to be able to find out hot spots of insecurity in their areas of jurisdiction. They should be in a position to obtain information from the public since those who take part in criminal activities are known by the same people,” said K’Otieno.
The MCA reiterated that security should not be left solely to the local administrators since they also depend on the support from the people they are mandated to protect. He also rubbished the perception that joblessness amongst the youth is the prerequisite of crime.
“I don’t think it is wise to glorify crime by saying that once someone is jobless, it is automatic that they must commit crime to survive. I believe that there are many jobless people who still survive without stealing. I am a testimony to that; I was elected because of the good deeds regardless of the fact that I had nothing to boast of,” explained the MCA.
The issue of mob justice also took centre stage where stakeholders in matters security stood out to campaign against it. They urged the public to follow proper channels of administering justice as opposed to taking law into their own hands.
K’Otieno said: “I am not advocating for mob justice but criminals should also know that human rights are like a double-edged sword. As we fight for their rights of justice, they should as well respect the rights of the innocent citizens.”
