Chiefs from Nakuru, Narok and Kajiado counties Thursday held a joint meeting in a bid to restore calm following the mounting tension that has gripped the area over insecurity.
The administrators stated that attacks on two elderly men at the controversial Utheri wa Lari farm in Mai Mahiu two weeks ago had sparked ethnic emotions, and that there were fears that one community was planning a retaliatory attack.
Mai Mahiu chief Zechariah Igera who convened the meeting said as administrators, they could not sit back and wait for the situation to get out of hand even though no serious breach of peace had been reported.
He added that security had been beefed up in the area, and asked local youth who have been keeping vigil to ward off attacks not to panic.
The two elderly men said they were attacked and injured by youths wielding machetes and rungus over alleged land row.
The incident forced leaders under the auspices of Mount Kenya Region to immediately convene a meeting in which they gave Internal Security CS Joseph Nkaissery a sevenday ultimatum to address the situation.
