Dairy farmers in Maseno and its surrounding regions have been asked to incorporate modern farming methods to boost their yields.
The farmers have been urged to stop pointing fingers of blame at witchcraft and superstition which most of them think has resulted to the less productiveness of their animals.
Speaking to George Lihare, the Farm Manager in Maseno University, he said if the farmers wanted to have more yields, then they should start doing things differently.
“You can’t get different results if you insist on doing things in the same way,” he said.
First, he urged the farmers to rare high breed cows known for high milk production. He said the breeds can be sourced at affordable rates from Government Veterinary Research Institute at Kabete or from qualified veterinary officers.
He said the breeds come as semen and by use of artificial insemination be transferred to a female cow which will be able to bare high breed calves with ability to produce much more milk.
He nonetheless continued to mention that the dairy animals should be given other food additives known as concentrates and fodder in addition to the natural grass they feed on.
Finally, he urged the farmers to maintain high levels of hygiene for their animals besides also ensuring they practice disease preventive measures like vaccination, deworming and spraying.
He said dairy animals are susceptible to infections that usually reduce milk production. He warned them from abandoning sick animals and pointing blames on witchcraft.
