While addressing residents at a public baraza on Friday, the chief observed that the Nyumba kumi initiative was a better option for community policing style as it was less costly. She added that security organs in the area would be supportive of the initiative to help people manage their own security.

“I see nyumba kumi as the best security measure. It will identify community members and root out crooks. But we do not want people spending money by paying few people in the community to solve security matters,’’ she said.

On the payment, Kamau was speaking in reference to the defunct community policing programme where members of a particular community were asked to contribute towards paying a few groups of people who vigil out at night to keep criminals at bay.

There has been a call from elders in the area for the revival of a community policing programme where criminal suspects identified were automatically executed by members of the public through lynching.

The thief however has been against the initiative as it would promote lawlessness against suspects.
