President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed a waiver of over Sh1.5 billion which farmers in the country owe Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC).
Uhuru's directive was part of a broader agenda to ease financial pressure on Kenyan farmers to promote investment in the key sector of the economy.
The loans were issued to support sorghum, wheat, and livestock farming, although capricious weather finally led to heavy farm losses that made farmers unable to repay.
This made AFC continue holding onto land title deeds which were taken as security for the loans.
The President instructed the National Treasury, which works with AFC, to ensure farmers are given back their title deeds to reduce pressure on them.
