Farmers’ lack of appreciation for commercial farming or agribusiness is to blame for the low uptake of Agricultural Finance Corporation (AFC) loans in the Nyanza region.

Agricultural Finance Corporation’s Regional Manager for the Western and Nyanza Ms. Martha Ayodo says that most farmers in Nyanza still practice subsistence farming and that is why they have never bothered to go for the AFC loans.

She has encouraged farmers to embrace agribusiness and go for the loans to improve their yield and to be able to grow socio-economically.

Ms. Ayodo stated that the Western Nyanza region has a total of nine branches but it is quite unfortunate those in the Nyanza region are underutilized in terms loan uptake as compared to the branches in Western.

The regional manager has asked farmers in Nyanza to take advantage of the availability of the AFC in the region to acquire loans which start from Sh70,000 to boost their agricultural activities.

She made the remarks at the Double Joy Children’s Farm in Rarieda sub-county on Thursday.

They donated 14 beds and mattresses, bedding, clothes, and foodstuffs to the orphanage following the recent fire that burnt down a dormitory at the institution.

Speaking during that occasion, the manager of the children’s home, Mr. Peter Atin, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the government agency for the kind gesture.
